Adobe Acrobat Update Hell
16:57 Wednesday, 7 July 2010
The above is a screenshot from the end of the Adobe Acrobat update process on a Mac. Adobe thinks you want to view PDF documents in your browser via their plugin. No you don’t. Do you? I mean come on. Repair? Huh? Even if you’ve unset the “View in the browser” option in Acrobat’s preferences. Anyway, notice the “Repair Setup” window does not focus. No problem, you think. I’ll just click on the window and give it focus, uncheck the box, click Continue and this experience will be over. But no! No I say. You can’t click on the window. You can’t give it focus. It doesn’t like you. Go away. You can’t tab to the window either. It’s taunting you. Hah, you think. I’ll kill the process and assume this does not leave my Acrobat in a unusable state. So kill -9 the damn thing or wheel out Activity Monitor and hit the big red button. What happens? I’ll tell you… The Adobe Acrobat Updater window is gone. The Repair Setup window is still there. Still unable to give it focus or click on any buttons. They’ve beaten you. You have to reboot. Thanks Adobe.
